Pirates outright Jose Tabata, place John Holdzkom on disabled list

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Indianapolis tweets that that the Pirates have outrighted Jose Tabata, placed John Holdzkom on the disabled list (with a right shoulder strain), placed Hunter Morris on the DL, and activated Alen Hanson.

The Tabata news was entirely expected -- no one was going to take his contract, and there was no reason for him to refuse his assignment and become a free agent. Hanson, meanwhile, had a fractured finger that wasn't supposed to keep him out long, and it's good to see that his recovery went according to plan and he's back.

The big news here is Holdzkom's injury. Holdzkom struggled through the first several weeks of the season and then missed time due to shoulder fatigue. It looked like he was fully recovered after an outstanding month of June in which he showed no evidence of his early-season control troubles, but apparently not. Here's hoping he can get back on track yet again -- as with last year, he could be a really interesting addition to the big-league team once rosters expand (if not before).
