Pirates promote Wilfredo Boscan, option Steve Lombardozzi

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have announced that they've recalled Wilfredo Boscan to the big leagues and optioned Steve Lombardozzi to Indianapolis.

You might recall that the Pirates promoted Boscan earlier this year, but he didn't actually play. Actually, back in May, the Pirates made almost the same transaction they're making now, promoting Boscan and optioning Lombardozzi. Like today's, that moved followed an extra-inning game. The Bucs kept Boscan on the 40-man roster after the May move, so they're promoting him today to provide bullpen help after the Pirates' epic matchup yesterday. Boscan has mostly pitched in Indianapolis' rotation, posting a 3.87 ERA, 6.0 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9. He last pitched on Tuesday, so he should be set to work several innings today if the Pirates need him to. Generally, he's not the best option for a big-league bullpen -- the keys today are that he's already on the 40-man roster and that he's well rested. But here's hoping tonight's game is a blowout and that Boscan finally gets to make his big-league debut.
