Pirates to promote Tyler Glasnow to Indianapolis

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates are promoting Tyler Glasnow to Indianapolis today, Sean McCool reports. The Pirates' top prospect has been dominant (11.7 K/9, 2.7 BB/9) despite dealing with injuries this year, and he's struck out at least 10 batters in his last two starts. Also, there's about a month left in the minor league season, and the Bucs frequently move top prospects up at the end of the minor league season, giving them time to get established at a new level. As McCool notes, Glasnow has made good progress with his changeup lately, so now seemed like the right time for a move.

You might think Glasnow would be a candidate for a September promotion to the big leagues, but I doubt it. The Pirates like to give their top prospects plenty of time at Triple-A before moving them up. If all goes well for Glasnow at Indianapolis, though, it wouldn't be surprising to see him in the big leagues shortly after the Super 2 threshold passes next summer.
