The Pirates have announced that they've selected Vance Worley's contract. To clear space on the 40-man roster, they've designated Radhames Liz for assignment.
The Bucs do, of course, have a doubleheader today, and Worley should be able to provide them with a bunch of innings if they're needed. He last pitched on Thursday, so he should be fresh, and he's pitched eight innings in all of his last three starts.
Liz pitched six innings after rejoining the Pirates this month. In the first two outings, he struck out five and walked none while allowing one run over four innings, but in the last outing last week against the Brewers, he allowed three runs. That's probably less important, though, than the fact that he's less prepared than Worley to work four or five innings.
In any case, it's nice to have Worley back in the big leagues. He's a perfectly capable pitcher who didn't do much to deserve being demoted in the first place.
