Pirates scout cricket player Kieran Powell

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates are one of many teams scouting 25-year-old former international cricket player Kieran Powell, Rob Biertempfel of the Trib writes. Powell is an outfielder. A native of Saint Kitts and Nevis, he has played for the West Indies.

Powell is almost certainly a longshot to make it, especially given his relatively advanced age. (Although he doesn't lack confidence: "All you've got to do is hit the ball into the gap and get on base, don't get picked off, come around and score," he says, via Biertempfel. "Catch some fly balls, throw some guys out with your rocket arm." Yeah, no problem!) But I'm not sure I'd read too much into the Pirates' interest in him. 14 teams attended his workout on Wednesday, and the Bucs hardly had to go out of their way to attend, since the workout was at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. You can read more about Powell here.
