Pirates sign Gift Ngoepe's brother

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

According to Baseball America's transactions page, the Pirates have signed Gift Ngoepe's younger brother, Victor.  Pirates Prospects (subscription required) states that Victor is a right-handed hitting infielder who'll turn 18 in two weeks.  He attended the African Elite Camp, where Gift was a coach.

Gift, of course, has attracted attention as the first black South African to sign with a major league baseball organization, which he did back in 2008.  The Pirates added him to the 40-man roster last fall, making it likely he'll reach the majors at some point.  That would cap off an amazing story.

No word yet on Victor's initial assignment.  He could go to the Gulf Coast League, but the Pirates sometimes send international signees, other than just Australians, to their Australian academy.
