MONDAY: The Pirates have re-signed Knudson, as anticipated.
FRIDAY: The Pirates have released reliever Guido Knudson to clear space for Trey Haley on their 40-man roster. They do, however, have interest in re-signing him to a minor-league deal, so perhaps there are more Guido Knudson stories in our future. Who knows!
Anyway, the Pirates claimed Knudson from the Tigers back in November. Knudson pitched pretty well at Triple-A Toledo last year, but as I noted at the time, the keys to that claim were probably that Knudson was optionable and was capable of pitching multiple innings. Those qualities could have given the Pirates a bit of flexibility with their 25-man roster and their bullpen. Since then, the Pirates have added a bunch of potential relievers (Juan Nicasio, Yoervis Medina, Neftali Feliz, and now Haley) to their 40-man roster, and that must have helped them feel Knudson was expendable. My guess is that he'll be back anyway -- he can sign with anyone, but the Bucs probably wouldn't have made clear that they continue to have interest in him if they didn't have a pretty good sense they could re-sign him.
