Pirates re-sign Casey Sadler and Angel Sanchez

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Pirates Prospects is reporting (sub. req'd) that the Pirates have re-signed right-handed pitchers Casey Sadler and Angel Sanchez to minor league contracts for 2017.  Both had Tommy John surgery roughly a year ago.  The Pirates signed both of them to minor league contracts for 2016 knowing they would spend the year rehabbing.  They both would have been minor league free agents this fall.

Sadler filled in for the Pirates in 2014-15, making six relief appearances in 2014 and one spot start in 2015.  His ERA in 15.1 IP was 6.46, but his xFIP was a more palatable 4.11.  He pitched well in 35 AAA starts.  Sanchez was a waiver claim from the Dodgers in 2014.  He scuffled in AA that year and was outrighted off the 40-man roster, but took a big step forward in 2015 with a 2.69 ERA divided between AA and AAA.  He got hurt right at the end of the season.  Sadler and Sanchez will both probably need some time to get back on track early in 2017, but if recovered, both could be useful depth pieces at some point in the season.

One other pitcher still in a similar situation is Brandon Cumpton.  He missed all of 2015 due to Tommy John surgery and all of 2016 due to shoulder surgery.  He's also eligible for minor league free agency, but it's unknown at this point whether he has signed, or will sign, with the Pirates for 2017.
