Pirates interested in Derek Holland

Last weekend, we noted that lefty starter Derek Holland’s agent had interest in his client signing with the Pirates. Today, it appears the feelings are mutual, as the Bucs are one of three teams (along with the Yankees and Padres) that have shown interest in Holland, as Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

As I wrote last weekend, I’m not a huge fan of Holland, even as a reclamation project. The Pirates have earned some benefit of the doubt with these sorts of acquisitions, though, last offseason’s misadventures with Jon Niese and Ryan Vogelsong notwithstanding. And Holland does have some things going for him — he just turned 30, so he isn’t old, and he was very good with the Rangers in 2011 and 2013. It remains to be seen, though, what he’ll have left after two years of injury troubles and a 2016 season in which he didn’t have the velocity he had in his prime.
