Pirates option or reassign 10 players, including Josh Bell

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have announced that they've optioned the following players to Indianapolis:

1B Josh Bell
OF Willy Garcia
INF Alen Hanson
INF Max Moroff
INF Gift Ngoepe
P John Holdzkom
P Nick Kingham

In addition, the Bucs also announced that they reassigned the following players to minor-league camp:

INF Juan Diaz
INF Dan Gamache
INF Adam Frazier

The list contains few surprises (with the slight exception of Ngoepe, who might theoretically have been considered for a bench job at the big-league level). A few of these players, including Bell and Hanson, look like they could contribute at some point this season. The Bucs' acquisitions of John Jaso, David Freese and Jason Rogers appear to have temporarily blocked Bell's path to the big leagues, though, and his defense at first is widely considered a work in progress. Freese also partially blocks Hanson for the time being. Most of the other players the Pirates optioned or reassigned today are prospects. Kingham, of course, is injured.

The moves leave 45 players left in big-league camp.
