Notes: Pirates defeat Tigers, Cardinals extend Wong

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

A few quick notes for Wednesday:

-P- The Pirates defeated the Tigers yesterday 4-2 in their first official Spring Training game of the year. Francisco Cervelli homered, and Jordy Mercer had two hits, including a homer of his own. Kyle Lobstein and Wilfredo Boscan pitched two scoreless innings apiece. Neftali Feliz pitched a perfect fifth.

Something potentially worth watching in the late innings -- Trey Haley, one of the Pirates' hard-throwing relief acquisitions this winter, pitched a perfect eighth and got a weak grounder and two strikeouts. Of course he wasn't exactly facing Miguel Cabrera in the eighth inning of a Spring Training game on the first of March, and Spring Training games mean next to nothing, but this looks to have been a good start to the year for a pitcher who has a good arm but struggled with his control in 2015.

-P- The Pirates have announced a multi-year broadcast extension with 93-7 The Fan.

-P- The Cardinals have extended Pirate-killer Kolten Wong in a deal that will buy out at least one free agent season. Wong has a .677 career OPS, but an .841 OPS and six home runs in 125 lifetime plate appearances against the Bucs.
