Gregory Polanco, Pirates reportedly agree to five-year extension

Gregory Polanco has agreed with the Pirates on a five-year contract extension with two club options, Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports.

The deal, Passan writes, is believed to be "in the mid $30-million range," and will begin in the 2017 season, giving the Pirates potential control over Polanco through 2023.

With Starling Marte already under team control through 2021, this locks in a second dynamic Pirates outfielder long-term (in addition to Andrew McCutchen's club control through 2018). Polanco had rejected an earlier long-term contract offer, so there were questions as to his openness to this kind of team-friendly deal the Pirates have come to employ.

While Polanco's production has yet to match the sky-high expectations he had coming into the major leagues, he's 24 years old with tools for days, and a no-brainer to bet on for the foreseeable future.
