Rob Biertempfel is tweeting that the Pirates are expected to call up Alen Hanson when Starling Marte goes on paternity leave. I don't know anything more about Marte's situation, but Hanson did not play for Indianapolis today, so a move could be imminent. It would explain Hanson playing left field exclusively for nearly a week and a half. That could also portend him getting some starts there while he's up.
A brief callup could be a good opportunity for Hanson. He's in his last option year and he hasn't exactly set the woods on fire in AAA. Last year he posted a .701 OPS there. This year, he sits at .707 after a strong start. He has four walks and 29 strikeouts, so his command of the strike zone is obviously an issue. By most accounts, he's a good defender at second base, but with Josh Harrison hitting well it's unlikely the Pirates will be looking to make a change there.
