Pirates place Ryan Vogelsong on DL, recall A.J. Schugel

The Pirates have placed Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day DL with facial fractures. They've promoted A.J. Schugel from Indianapolis to take Vogelsong's spot on the active roster.

In case you missed it (you almost certainly didn't), Vogelsong got hit in the head by a Jordan Lyles fastball yesterday, making a brutal sound clearly audible on the broadcast. There's video here. It's no surprise that something's broken. It's pointless to speculate much, but Vogelsong is probably going to be out awhile. Some of the damage was reportedly to his orbital bone; A.J. Burnett fractured his orbital bone while bunting in Spring Training 2012 and took more than seven weeks to make his season debut.

Anyway, Schugel is back after making two appearances with Indianapolis. He hasn't gotten great results in the majors so far this year, with a 4.96 ERA in 16 1/3 innings, but he struck out 17 batters and walked only four in that span. There might be a decent reliever in there somewhere.
