The Pirates have announced that they've placed Gerrit Cole on the 15-day DL (retroactive to June 11) with a triceps strain and promoted Jameson Taillon, who will start tonight against the Mets.
The move comes as no surprise. Cole left his last start due to injury, and Taillon hasn't pitched since last Wednesday. that was, of course, Taillon's big-league debut (also against the Mets), after which the Pirates sent him back to Indianapolis to make room for bullpen help they needed at the time. Ordinarily, that would have meant that Taillon wouldn't yet be eligible to return to the majors, but the usual waiting period doesn't apply when there's a player going on the DL, as is the case here.
Anyway, a triceps strain doesn't sound particularly serious. Hopefully for the Pirates, Cole will be able to return quickly -- they need him badly. At least we'll get to watch Taillon pitch in the meantime.
