The Pirates have announced that they've reinstated Jameson Taillon from the DL, recalled Francisco Cervelli from his rehab, optioned Chad Kuhl to Indianapolis, and designated Erik Kratz for assignment.
None of the moves are surprising. Taillon is scheduled to start tonight against the Brewers, and there were rumblings that Kuhl would be optioned to make room for him. Kratz, despite a couple huge hits, hasn't worked out at all in Cervelli's absence, so it makes sense that they would prefer Erik Fryer, who has been fine, as Cervelli's current backup.
Anyway, we'll see what kind of boost Cervelli can provide. He had hit for a .373 on-base percentage but with virtually no power before going down about six weeks ago with a broken hand, the kind of injury that typically itself diminishes power. Tonight will be his first time catching Taillon, who the Pirates placed on the DL two weeks ago with what was described as right shoulder fatigue.
