Mark Melancon named to NL All-Star team

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have announced that Mark Melancon has made his third All-Star team as a member of the Bucs. Also, Starling Marte is among the Final Vote participants (along with Brandon Belt, Ryan Braun, Jake Lamb and Trevor Story).

Melancon continues to baffle me a bit from an analytical perspective -- his peripherals keep getting worse, but his results never seem to change. He's been as effective as ever this season, with a 1.35 ERA in 33.1 innings so far. He's also converted 24 of 25 save chances. Melancon also made the All-Star game in 2013 and 2015.

Gregory Polanco, who's probably having the best season of any Pirate, stands out as an obvious snub. He was probably hurt by Odubel Herrera (Phillies) and Adam Duvall (Reds) being selected as their teams' sole representatives. Not that I'm especially worried about it -- Polanco has a bright future and is an excellent bet to make his All-Star debut at some point.
