Elias Diaz will be out for the rest of the year due to discomfort an infection in his left leg. He had a procedure done to clean it out in Pittsburgh. Between his elbow surgery and now this, Diaz has missed all but about a month and a half of the season, and has gotten four ABs in the majors in a year when the Pirates were desperately searching for catchers.
This obviously leaves the Pirates with a dubious catching situation while they play out the string on their disappointing season. Francisco Cervelli can't stay healthy. Chris Stewart has a gimpy knee and an OPS+ of 62 on the year. And Eric Fryer has an OPS+ of 39 during his time with the Pirates, while catching only two of 15 base stealers. Stewart has compiled 0.0 fWAR this year, while Fryer has managed to contribute -0.2 during limited playing time.
But, hey, the Pirates didn't need Reese McGuire because there were other players ahead of him.
