Pirates Prospects is reporting (sub. req’d) that the Pirates have re-signed right-hander Casey Sadler and catcher Jin-De Jhang to minor league contracts for 2018. Both will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft, although neither is likely to be selected.

Sadler appeared briefly for the Pirates in 2014 and 2015, but missed half of 2015 and all of 2016 due to Tommy John surgery. The Pirates removed him from the 40-man roster and he spent 2017 coming back from the surgery. He can start or relieve and, if he gets back to where he was before the injury, he’ll provide good AAA depth.

Jhang was a surprise to me, as I thought he wasn’t eligible for minor league free agency for another year. He signed in June 2011 and didn’t play that year, but it evidently counted towards his minor league service time. He had an uncharacteristically bad year at the plate in 2017 as he tried to bounce back from a spring oblique injury. He played well defensively, throwing out 47% of base stealers. He also figures to provide upper-minors depth.
