In the wake of claiming LHP Nik Turley off waivers, the Pirates have outrighted left-handed reliever Dan Runzler and he’s elected free agency.
Lefty Dan Runzler was sent outright off the 40-man roster and elected free agency.

Runzler was a surprise addition to the Pirates’ 40-man roster in September. He had some moderate major league success back in 2010 and had been struggling ever since to overcome command issues. He made some progress at Indianapolis this year, but didn’t really pitch that well. He had a 1.57 WHIP in AAA with a high BB/9 of 4.8 and an uncharacteristically low 7.8 K/9. The Pirates called him up anyway and he saw limited action, retiring only 11 of the 20 batters he faced.
