Willie Stargell @ Boy Scout Jamboree

It was 1973 and I was at the Boy Scout Jamboree. Looking at the schedule of events one day I see that Willie Stargell was going to be there that afternoon. Being the only sports fan in our troop I was the only one interested in seeing Willie. The other boys convinced me to go to some other activity on the other side of the park with the assurance that we'd be back in time to see Willie.

As the afternoon progressed I realized that the others had no intention of going back to see him (what happened to a scout is honest?) . I decided to head out on my own to see him. I waited about 20 minutes for a bus that ran a circuit around the park but it didn't arrive as scheduled so I started walking. There was a floating bridge across the lake but it was out of order meaning that I had to walk around the lake but I still made it back in time to see Willie.

About a half hour past the scheduled time a big shiny Caddy pulls up and Willie steps out from behind the wheel and makes a beeline for the stage almost stepping on me ignoring my offer of a handshake. He gets up on the stage and says something to the effect that scouting is great, what we are doing here is great, I'll try to hit a homerun for you tonight, So long.

So here's my summary - got betrayed by dishonest scouts, walked across dry dusty park, Willie rejected my handshake and no homerun that night.
