Pirates reassign Austin Meadows

The Pirates have reassigned Austin Meadows to the minors, as Tim Williams was (I think) the first to report. Meadows played in the Pirates’ Triple-A game today in Dunedin.

This comes as no surprise, as the Pirates have no starting spot available for Meadows at the moment, typically like to have their top prospects come up in June rather than April for Super 2 reasons, and surely want to have Meadows get more Triple-A experience after only a brief stint there last year. He certainly had a strong spring training, though, batting .326/.420/.558.

Hopefully Meadows will be able to build on that success at Triple-A and further force his way into the Pirates’ plans. He likely won’t have a starting spot, though, until the Bucs either trade Andrew McCutchen or someone gets injured. It’s unclear what the Pirates will do if Meadows forces the issue before one of those things happens, but if he does, that’s a good problem to have.
