I’m not sure any of Bucs Dugout’s front-pagers were around for today’s game, and as you can probably guess from the timestamp, I wasn’t anywhere near a computer at all, but here’s a thread to discuss the Pirates’ 4-2 win over the Cubs Friday afternoon.
Gerrit Cole pitched six solid innings, striking out five while allowing two runs. Felipe Rivero got the Bucs into a huge jam in the eighth, walking a batter and hitting another before a two-out single that loaded the bases, but he got a force out from Willson Contreras. Tony Watson likewise loaded the bases (well, thanks in part to an error from David Freese) in the ninth, but escaped with a save.
Freese — who’s been by far the Pirates’ best hitter in the early going — led the offense with three hits. Those included an RBI double after a long battle with Kyle Hendricks in the second to put the Bucs on the board, as well as an RBI single in a three-run sixth. He later came around to score that inning on a two-run double by Francisco Cervelli.
