The Pirates placed Gregory Polanco on the 10-day disabled list (retro May 15) with a left hamstring strain. Danny Ortiz (an outfielder!) has been recalled from Indianapolis and is available for tonight's game.
"We're continuing to get many new opportunities disguised as challenges," Clint Hurdle said of relentless depletion of the roster this season. "Got to play on.'
Polanco just seemed to be finding his form before the injury, going 5-for-14 with a 1.000 OPS over his last four starts.
Ortiz was hitting .253/.304/.295 in Indianapolis.
"He's a good defender," Hurdle said of the newly arrived outfielder. "We brought him up earlier in the season and unfortunately with the catching situation we had to turn him right around and send him back."
Hurdle suggested that Ortiz's role will likely be a late inning defensive replacement.
