The Pirates have reinstated Gregory Polanco from the 10-day disabled list and optioned Danny Ortiz to AAA.
Polanco, of course, has been having a frustrating season. Instead of breaking out as the star the Pirates have been anticipating, he’s hitting 252/336/370, with just one HR, and struggling defensively. After being plagued by nagging injuries over the second half of last season, it took Polanco just a month into this season to suffer three more injuries, the last one a strained left hamstring that landed him on the DL. Last year, the Pirates tried to avoid putting Polanco on the DL, with the result that he never seemed to get healthy. Hopefully, they’ll get different results this time.
Ortiz went 1-for-12 with the Pirates. He got a hit in his first major league at-bat, but was 0-for-11 after that. Given his track record in the minors, he wasn’t likely to do anything at the plate, so the results there weren’t surprising.
