Pirates’ reliever Felipe Rivero has hired Scott Boras as his agent. This comes shortly after Boras also picked up Pirates’ closer Tony Watson as a client. Rivero currently has a 0.73 ERA, 2.87 xFIP, 0.81 WHIP and 9.85 K/9.
Of course, this move has no more relevance to the Pirates than Watson’s decision. The Pirates control Rivero’s rights for four more years beyond this year. Few relievers retain Rivero’s level of effectiveness for such long periods and, even if Rivero turns out to be the next Mariano Rivera, the Pirates won’t be keeping him beyond his free agent eligibility no matter who his agent is.
But it’s funny to think of Boras collecting Pirates’ relievers. I guess it’s something Jhan Marinez and Josh Lindblom can look forward to.
