The Pirates selected Steven Jennings, a right-handed pitcher from DeKalb County High School in Tennessee, in the second round, with the 42nd overall pick in the draft.
This pick is the Pirates’ compensation for not signing last year’s No. 41 pick Nick Lodolo. The Pirates will get no compensation if they don’t sign Jennings, so they must be confident in that regard.
Jennings tore his ACL playing football last fall, but returned to pitch with a knee brace, Baseball America says. He’s hit from 90-96 MPH with his fastball and his slider and curveball both have potential. MLB.com says he has loose, quick arm action.
He’s listed at 6’2’’ and 180 pounds.
