The Pirates have taken Calvin Mitchell, an outfielder from Rancho Bernardo High School in California, in the second round with the 50th overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Mitchell displayed a standout hit tool last summer with Team USA and on the showcase circuit, but struggled in high school ball this spring as he looked to sell out for power, showing more swing-and-miss and losing his feel for the opposite field.
There’s a lot of pressure on Mitchell’s bat, as he’s already in left field, with his speed and arm rating below average. He could have a future at first base.
He has a commitment to the University of San Diego, though it’s unclear how much it will take Mitchell to sign, and whether the Pirates might free some slot money here for Shane Baz.
