Pirates sign sixth round pick Cody Bolton, two others

MLB: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have announced the signing of sixth round draft pick Cody Bolton, 14th round pick Chris Sharpe and 31st round pick Jesse Medrano (sub. req’d).

Bolton is a projectible right-handed prep pitcher who already sits at 91-93 mph and has three solid pitches. He had a commitment to Michigan and was not expected to be an easy sign. He undoubtedly got an above-slot amount, but there’s no indication of his bonus yet.

Sharpe was selected as a sophomore-eligible outfielder from U. Mass. Lowell. He has good upside for a 14th round pick, as he has a great deal of raw power. As the tweet from Jim Callis indicates, Sharpe signed for just over double the slot.

Medrano is a senior third baseman from Fresno State. He had a big final year after putting up very modest numbers in his first three years. I tend to be skeptical about college seniors having breakout years, so I’m guessing Medrano will be an organizational player. He’s played second and short as well as third in college.

The Pirates have now signed 34 of their 42 draftees. The only pick from the first 11 rounds (13 picks) who hasn’t yet signed is third rounder Dylan Busby, who recently finished up play in the College World Series.

UPDATE: A little surprisingly, Bolton signed for $300,000, which was just $44,100 above the slot amount.
