The Pirates have recalled right-handed relief pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas from triple-a Indianapolis and optioned Johnny Barbato to Indianapolis.
The 24-year-old Neverauskas made one appearance with the Pirates this April, becoming the first Lithuanian-born player in Major League Baseball history. He’s struck out 8.13 batters per nine innings and walked 3.25, posting a 3.58 ERA with Indianapolis this season.
The move is a minor shuffle of the deck for a beleaguered Pirates bullpen that blew leads in Baltimore on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Barbato, part of the Pirates white flag crew, was tagged for three runs in Wednesday’s loss. He’d registered a 4.84 ERA and a 12.6 percent walk rate in 15 major-league appearances since being acquired in a minor trade with the Yankees.
