Cannonballs coming: Good games for Brault, Newman and Keller

MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

— Steven Brault (pictured) had another strong start, but Indianapolis (47-37) dropped a 1-0 game to Columbus. Brault threw five shutout innings, but a bout of wildness in the sixth cost him the game. He loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batsman, then gave up a sacrifice fly. He finished with three hits and three walks allowed over six innings, striking out five. He threw 98 pitches, only 57 for strikes, thanks to the one inning. Indy had only five hits, with Phil Gosselin going 2-3. Starling Marte moved his rehab to AAA, going 0-3 as the DH.

Chris Bostick: 1-3, BB
Jordan Luplow: 1-4
Casey Sadler: 2 IP, BB, 2 K
Angel Sanchez: IP, K

— Kevin Newman fell a triple short of a cycle as Altoona (42-39) blanked Binghamton, 6-0. Newman finished 3-4 with his fourth HR and four RBIs. Tanner Anderson threw eight shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk, and striking out five. Yeudy Garcia returned from rehab and threw a scoreless ninth inning. Garcia is slated to move to the bullpen for the time being.

Logan Hill: 1-3
Edwin Espinal: 3-4
Wyatt Mathisen: 1-3, BB

— Mitch Keller threw five strong innings as Bradenton (45-34) beat Palm Beach, 3-1. Keller gave up a run on four hits and a walk, and struck out five. He threw 72 pitches, 45 for strikes. Bret Helton and Seth McGarry combined to retire 12 straight after Keller came out. Ke’Bryan Hayes went 3-5, but came out for a pinch runner (sub. req’d) after stepping awkwardly on second on a ninth-inning double.

Will Craig: 2-5, 2B
Christian Kelley: 1-3, BB
Kevin Krause: 0-3, BB
McGarry: IP, K, Sv

— West Virginia (36-43) lost to Lexington, 9-5. Blake Cederlind got off to another rough start, giving up three runs in the first two innings, but recovered to throw three scoreless innings after that. He allowed four hits and three walks overall, and didn’t strike out anybody. Albert Baur went 2-4 with his fifth HR and three RBIs.

Adrian Valerio: 1-4, 2B
Trae Arbet: 1-3, 2B, BB

--- Morgantown (10-5) beat Mahoning Valley, 8-5, in 11 innings. Catcher Yoel Gonzalez, normally a good-glove, weak-bat type, had a strange game. He went 5-6 at the plate with a double, a triple and four RBIs, but also committed three throwing errors. Raul Siri was 3-6 with a double and 14th round pick Chris Sharpe 3-6 with a walk. Starter Stephan Meyer gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings. Gift Ngoepe started his rehab, playing seven innings at short and going 0-3.

Bligh Madris: 1-6
Blake Weiman: IP, H, K

— Bristol (3-10) lost to Kingsport, 5-4. Braeden Ogle pitched well for five innings, allowing just one run. In the sixth, though, the first two hitters he faced reached base. Reliever Mason Ward then let both runners score. Ogle was charged with three runs, one of them unearned, in five-plus innings on five hits. He walked two and struck out two. Husacar Fuentes was 3-4 with a double.

Edison Lantigua: 0-2, 3 BB
Yondry Contreras: 0-1

— The GCL Pirates (2-6) got shelled by the Blue Jays, 10-0. Starter Leandro Pina gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits. He walked one and struck out three, and would have given up a lot more runs if the Jays hadn’t run into a couple of outs on the bases. Nineteenth round pick, prep righty Jacob Webb, made his pro debut with a scoreless inning. He gave up two hits, one an infield single and the other also a groundball hit. Stephen Alemais made his first rehab appearance following a ligament injury to his thumb, playing short for six innings and going 1-2.

Cal Mitchell: 1-4
Jeremias Portorreal: 0-3, BB
Rodolfo Castro: 2-4

— The DSL Pirates (17-10) rallied for four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie their game with the Dodgers2, then won, 9-8, on a walkoff single in the ninth by Williams Calderon. Kyle Simmons went 3-4 with a walk and scored the winning run following a ninth inning double.

Jean Eusebio: 1-3, 2 BB
Francisco Acuna: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB
Samuel Inoa: 1-2, BB, 3 runs
Sherten Apostel: 2-5
