Jameson Taillon looks to hold back Big Red Machine

The Pirates return Tuesday night to begin an eight game homestand as right-hander Jameson Taillon takes the mound against the first last place Cincinatti Reds, who have taken six of seven from the Pirates so far this season. The Bucs currently have a composite 13-19 record against teams in 4th or 5th place in their respective divisions.

The Reds counter with the familiar right-hander Homer Bailey, who once threw a no-hitter at PNC Park, but has battled injuries for three years. This season he is 2-5 with an 8.37 ERA in seven starts, striking out only 5.4 batters per 9 innings while allowing 1.6 homers. His fastball still average 93.8 MPH this year, but since 2015 Bailey has made only 15 MLB starts, with a 7.32 ERA in 67 2/3 innings.

Scott Schebler takes a seat as rookie Jesse Winker starts in right field. Winker has only played in 9 games in MLB, all this year, after hitting 314/397/408 in 85 games at Triple-A Lousville. He’s a career 298/398/449 hitter in the minor leagues.

For the Pirates, Josh Harrison is out of the lineup (possibly because of the leg discomfort that caused him to leave Sunday’s game while running the bases) with Adam Frazier taking over at second base. Meanwhile, John Jaso is in right field, preventing Jordan Luplow from yet achieving consecutive starts.
