Pirates shuffle roster

According to their web site, the Pirates have made a series of moves that significantly change their struggling bullpen. George Kontos and Joaquin Benoit have been placed on the 10-day disabled list, Kontos with a groin strain and Benoit with strike zone discomfort right knee inflammation. Dovydas Neverauskas, who wouldn’t have been available today, has been optioned to AAA.

To fill the three roster spots, the Pirates have recalled right-handers Edgar Santana and Johnny Barbato, and left-hander Steven Brault. All three have seen time with the Pirates this year. Brault appeared in three games, giving up four runs in eight innings on eight hits and three walks, striking out three. Santana threw 7.2 IP over nine games, giving up five earned runs but also striking out twelve. Barbato threw 22.1 IP over 15 games, with a 4.84 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.
