Rinku Singh’s long, winding journey is taking another turn. The former Pirates minor-league relief pitcher, the first Indian-born player in professional baseball, has signed a contract to wrestle with WWE.
Singh, 29, was signed along with Dinesh Patel after their performances in “Million Dollar Arm,” a 2008 reality TV show. The pitchers’ stories were later adapted to a Disney movie, released in 2014.
Singh pitched five seasons over eight years in the Pirates system. He reached as high as low Class-A before losing significant time to injuries. He didn’t pitch in a game at all from 2013 to 15, then returned to pitch exactly one inning in the Gulf Coast League in 2016.
A former track and field athlete, Singh will train at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Fla.
