The Pirates have announced their non-roster spring training invitees. The full list runs to 23 players, of whom only one is a new name:
Pitchers (all right-handed)
The new name is Lavarnway, who’s appeared in bits and pieces of six major league seasons. He’s totaled 140 major league games and posted a 201/262/318 batting line. His opportunities have been getting scarcer since his days as a well regarded prospect with the Red Sox. He didn’t appear in the majors in 2016 and got into just six games with the Athletics in 2017. He has a .785 career OPS in AAA, so there’s probably a little more hitting ability there than his track record suggests. He’s generally been pretty decent at controlling the running game. His signing no doubt indicates the Pirates aren’t too sanguine about having Francisco Cervelli, Elias Diaz and Jacob Stallings as being their only real options behind the plate.
Not on the list is Montana DuRapau, who was recently hit with a 50-game suspension for his second positive, drug-of-abuse test. He was originally expected to get an NRI, but that obviously got scuttled.
