The Pirates have claimed right-handed pitcher Shane Carle off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. To make room, they’ve designated right-hander Johnny Barbato for assignment.
The Pirates originally drafted Carle in the tenth round in 2013. They traded him to the Rockies in 2014 for Rob Scahill. Carle got into three major league games for the Rox in 2017. His AAA numbers haven’t exactly been stellar, although he’s been pitching in a rough environment at Albuquerque. In 64 games at that level, 23 of them starts, he has a 5.52 ERA and 1.59 WHIP, with a 2.8 BB/9 and 7.1 K/9. He throws the standard four pitches, with a fastball about 93-94 mph. He’s not a groundball pitcher.
The Pirates obtained Barbato from the Yankees in a minor deal in April 2017. He got into 24 games with them, with a 4.08 ERA, but a less than impressive 5.76 xFIP. He may slip through waivers.
