As the off-season chugs along, it appears the Pirates have a new theme song. At least, that’s from the fans’ perspective. For the players, it’s time for mini-camp. It’s such an important event that, as far as I can figure out, the two Pittsburgh newspapers aren’t even covering it. According to Pirates Prospects (sub. req’d), quite a few players have arrived, including Jameson Taillon, Josh Bell, Tyler Glasnow, Clay Holmes, Max Moroff, Austin Meadows, Kevin Newman, Dario Agrazal, Yeudy Garcia, Adam Frazier, Kevin Kramer, Tyler Eppler, Trevor Williams, Steven Brault, Luis Escobar, Nik Turley, Jordan Milbrath, Todd Cunningham, Nick Burdi and Chad Kuhl. Hopefully, the malaise afflicting the fanbase hasn’t extended to them.
UPDATE: P2 does have some lottery ticket medical news (all sub. req’d). The Pirates have three young pitchers recovering from elbow surgeries. John Pomeroy, a 13th round pick in 2016, and Shea Murray, an 18th rounder in 2017, are both big college right-handers with upper-90s velocity and very limited track records. Pomeroy is coming back from Tommy John surgery and Murray from a less radical variation on TJ where the torn ligament is reattached (this apparently can’t often be done). Both will hopefully be ready for short season ball this year. Jake Webb, another RHP, was the team’s 19th round pick out of prep ball in 2017. He’s your basic projectable prep righty. Webb had ulnar nerve transposition surgery on his right elbow last summer and also should be ready for short season ball this year.
