Bucco breakfast: Non-tenders galore

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

I’m too lazy to check this out, but it sure seems like there were a lot of non-tenders this year. I attribute it to teams seeing less and less value in what Travis Sawchik would call middle class players. But maybe it’s not really happening.

Anyway, I thought I’d make a list of the players who weren’t tendered contracts at the deadline for offering contracts. (Of course, there are lots of other free agents out there.) I’ll be surprised if the Pirates don’t go after at least a couple of these guys. They’re mainly the type of guy you bring in on a minor league deal with a chance to compete for a roster spot. We may not see anything for quite a while, as many of these players will probably hang tight to see whether they can get major league offers. For instance, Matt Joyce signed a minor league deal with the Pirates after spring training had started, then made the team.

Some of these players should be at least potential targets for the Pirates. Most of the corner infielders have some power, not that the Pirates value power. Beckham, Schoop and Flores might be intriguing, but they’re arguably not good fits. The outfielders, unfortunately, are a sorry bunch. Grossman is the only one I could see going after, mainly because he hits LHPs better than RHPs, which is unusual for a switch-hitter. Among the lefty relievers, Avilan and Cedeno might be worth a shot.

  • Pirates Prospects has an article up on Jesus Valles, who was probably the best pitcher (not necessarily the best prospect) on the Pirates’ Dominican Summer League team this year. No drama or anything, but it’s a good read on the journey from Venezuela to pro ball. (It appears that the pay wall at P2 is temporarily down, so you don’t need to be a subscriber.)
  • Ivan Nova will have a new agent as he heads into his walk year.
  • With Jean Segura headed to Philly, Seattle will do “whatever it takes” to trade third baseman Kyle Seager. Seems like a near-total teardown from a team that won 89 games, albeit with a 77-win pythag. Apparently, the Mariners aren’t content with competing.
