The Pirates have optioned outfielder Jordan Luplow and catcher Jacob Stallings to Triple-A Indianapolis. Also Saturday morning, the Pirates reassigned pitchers Tyler Jones and Richard Rodriguez to minor-league camp.
Out of the four, Luplow was the most likely to break camp on the 25-man Major League roster. This is presumably good news for the chances of Bryce Brentz (who is out of options) or Jose Osuna, other right-handed hitters battling for at-bats from a corner outfield spot. Sean Rodriguez could also fill in the corners, or really anywhere — he’s already known to be in line as the backup center fielder. David Freese will be another righty frequently coming off the bench, likely also getting time at third and perhaps first base, the latter of which could eat into Osuna’s time or chances at a roster spot.
