Cannonballs coming: Waddell throws shutout ball and the other teams bring the lumber

Indianapolis lost a doubleheader to the weather.

— Altoona (6-2) got a fake win over Erie after nine innings of baseball and two of something else. The baseball game ended with the score tied, 2-2. Each team got a fake run in the 10th inning. In the 11th, though, Altoona got a fake run on a triple by Jason Martin and then Ke’Bryan Hayes singled in a real one. Erie could counter only with a fake run, so Altoona won, 3(+2) - 2(+2). In the baseball part of the game, Brandon Waddell (pictured) had his second strong start, allowing just an unearned run in six innings. He gave up two hits, walked none and struck out six. Martin and Hayes each went 2-5.

Cole Tucker: 1-3, 2B, BB (batting 367/457/533)
Will Craig: 0-3, BB
Logan Hill: 0-5, 3 K
Geoff Hartlieb: 2 IP, H, FR (fake run), 4 K

— Bradenton (8-2) brought out the bats in a 9-5 win over Clearwater. The Marauders had 15 hits, including HRs by Bligh Madris, Hunter Owen and Albert Baur. The longballs were Madris’ second, and Owen’s and Baur’s first. Madris finished 3-5, Owen 3-4 with two doubles. Cam Vieaux had a rough start but got through five innings, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits. He walked none and struck out three. Casey Hughston went 1-3 to break a season-opening 0-for-24 streak.

Adrian Valerio: 2-5
Arden Pabst: 2-3, 2B, BB
Bo Schultz: IP, 2 K
Ronny Agustin: 2 IP, 3 K

— West Virginia (5-5) exploded for seven runs in the top of the ninth and outscored Hickory, 15-11. The Power were down to their last out and trailing by a run when Deon Stafford put them ahead with a two-run double. Kyle Watson followed with his second HR. Ike Schlabach’s first start of the season didn’t go well. He allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out two. His defense didn’t help, contributing three errors, including Rodolfo Castro’s fifth and Oneil Cruz’ sixth. Stafford finished 2-3 with a walk and three runs. Mason Martin went 1-3 with his third HR, but came out of the game after grounding out in the fifth. It’s possible he didn’t run it out. Chris Sharpe went 4-5 with a triple and three runs.

Castro: 2-6, 3B, 3 RBI
Cal Mitchell: 2-5
Dylan Busby: 1-4
Cruz: 0-5
Blake Cederlind: 2 IP, H, 3 K
