It’s another frigid night in the Northeast as Trevor Williams looks to keep his streak alive. Cincinnati counters with 6-2, 170 pound righthander Luis Castillo, who’s actually pretty good.
Clint Hurdle has posted his typical 2018 roster, while the Red Bryan Price has shaken up his lineup a bit, batting his pitcher eighth while dropping Billy Hamilton to ninth.
The 25 year old Castillo who was acquired before the 2017 season from Miami in the Dan Straily trade, started last year at Double-A Pensacola where he posted a 2.58 ERA in 14 starts (2.66 career in 458 minor league innings), while walking only 13 and striking out 81 in 80 innings. Promoted to the big leagues on June 22, he then made 15 more starts, good for a 3.12 ERA with 32 walks and 98 strikeouts in 89 innings.
Last year Castillo’s 4-seam fastball average 97.5 mph and his 2-seamer 97.0. When facing a right-handed batter he throws mainly the 4-seam and a slider, getting 26% and 34% whiff rates, respectively, with a decent number of 2-seamers and changeups. To lefties it’s the 4-seamer and change, with 17% and 39% whiff rates, and a fair number of 2-seamers.
Meanwhile Trevor Williams is still working on a streak of which we shall not speak.
At 6 p.m. it’s still a balmy 55 degrees out, expected to be 51 at 7:05 game time, but with a chance of showers and rapidly dropping temperatures during the game, with a forecast of snow by the time the game ends.
