Pirates promote Jesus Liranzo to Indianapolis

MLB: Baltimore Orioles-Media Day Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates have promoted (sub. req’d) right-handed reliever Jesus Liranzo from Altoona to Indianapolis. They had claimed Liranzo off waivers from the Dodgers at the beginning of the season. He has excellent velocity, hitting 100 mph frequently, but until this year he had little experience on the mound and was plagued by control problems. He’s been lights out for Altoona, allowing no runs, seven hits and three walks over a dozen innings, while fanning 18. He’s on the 40-man roster and could be an option for the Pirates in the near future.

To make room on the AAA roster, the Pirates released right-handed reliever Tyler Jones. They had signed Jones to a minor league deal for this year with an NRI. He looked good in camp, but struggled with Indy. He had a 5.40 ERA and peripherals to match in a dozen games.
