Cannonballs coming: Altoona bullpen blows another one

Bristol and the DSL Pirates1 were off.

— Alex McRae got pummeled as Indianapolis (50-43) lost to Gwinnett, 7-2. McRae gave up six runs on nine hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out two. The Indians had only six hits. Jason Martin was 2-4 with a double and Kevin Kramer 1-3 with a walk.

— Altoona’s (48-43) struggling bullpen blew another late-inning lead as the Curve lost to Bowie, 7-5, in ten innings. Eduardo Vera gave up two runs over seven innings on three hits (two of them solo HRs) and no walks, with four strikeouts. He left with a 4-2 lead, but the bullpen gave up three between the eighth and ninth. The Curve tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the bullpen gave up a fake run and a real one in the top of the tenth. Christian Kelley (pictured) went 2-5 with his seventh home run, a three-run shot. Bralin Jackson was 2-5 with a triple. Cole Tucker 2-5 with a double.

— Bradenton (46-45) lost to Jupiter, 4-3. Evan Piechota gave up three runs, two earned, in six innings. The Marauders had only four hits. Jared Oliva was 1-4 with a double and Adrian Valerio was 1-4.

— West Virginia (50-41) beat Delmarva, 8-1, in a game that was called after six innings due to rain. Hunter Stratton gave up one run over five innings on three hits and four walks. He struck out two. Ryan Peurifoy and Ben Bengtson each had two hits. Lolo Sanchez was 1-2 with a walk and Cal Mitchell 1-3 with a double and a walk. Rodolfo Castro was 0-4.

— Morgantown (11-20) lost to State College, 4-3. Mike LoPresti got knocked out with one down in the third, giving up four runs on seven hits. Nick Valaika went 3-4 with a double and his second home run. The rest of the team had only four hits. The Black Bears did draw seven walks, but went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded a dozen. Grant Koch was 1-3 with a double and two walks.

— The GCL Pirates (9-13) beat the Blue Jays, 10-8. Kyle Mottice reached base four times, going 2-3 with two walks and three runs. Matt Morrow went 2-2, and Steven Kraft and Justin Harrer were each 2-4 with a double. Every one of those players signed out of college, in a league in which the average batter is under 20. Jack Herman was 0-5 and Jean Eusebio 0-3. Eusebio is mired in a 2-for-31 slump. Noe Toribio started and gave up five runs in four and two-thirds innings, although he allowed only four hits and two walks. He did strike out six.

— The DSL Pirates2 (14-22) lost to the Royals2, 1-0. Braham Rosario (18) gave up an unearned run on just one hit and two walks in four innings. He struck out two. Lefty Denny Roman (19) retired six straight in his two innings, fanning five of them. The Pirates had six hits, all singles. Angel Basabe (17) was 0-4.
