Francisco Cervelli didn’t miss a beat in his return to big league action. His double off the right-center field wall in the 1st inning led to the Pirates’ first run of the game and helped to set the tone in Sunday’s victory against the Phillies.
Nick Kingham also did his part in helping to avoid the sweep while throwing six solid innings where the only run he allowed was on a solo shot in the 4th inning issued to Nick Williams.
Here’s how the scoring went:
Cervelli helped start the scoring in the second inning with a one out double to right-center field. Meadows was able to reach on a fielding error to follow it up before Harrison laced a single up the middle to score Cervelli for the first run of the game.
The Phillies’ Nick Williams evened the score with a solo home run to right-center field in the top of the 4th inning but the Bucs were quick to retaliate.
Pittsburgh was able to plate three runs in the bottom half of the 4th inning with help from two unlikely candidates. Nick Kingham toasted the left fielder on an RBI double allowing Meadows and Mercer to score, who had previously singled.
Josh Bell traded places with Kingham after he chipped a ground rule double down the right field line.
This brought an end to the scoring on the day.
After Kingham’s solid day, Santana, Crick, and Vazquez combined to record a scoreless 7th, 8th, and 9th innings while teaming up to strike out five.
Final score: Pirates 4, Phillies 1
W: Kingham (3-4) L: Anderson (0-1) S: Vazquez (18)
The Bucs will open up a series against the Nationals tomorrow behind Ivan Nova. Game time is 7:05pm EDT.
