Minor Transactions
by Brian Cartwright
- 2018-08-05 RHP Dario Agrazal assigned to Altoona Curve from Bradenton Marauders.
- 2018-08-05 RHP Pedro Vasquez assigned to Bradenton Marauders from Altoona Curve.
- 2018-08-05 C Zac Susi assigned to Bristol Pirates from West Virginia Black Bears.
Agrazal is listed as an assignment but more likely it’s him being reinstated from the DL after being on a rehab assignment to Bradenton. He’d gone on the DL May 29 with a right shoulder strain after compiling a 2.79 ERA in 8 starts for Altoona, then made two appearances (8 scoreless innings) with Bradenton since the rehab started in July 23.
After a solid 2017 in Bradenton (3.73 ERA in 24 starts, 30 BB & 107 K’s in 138 IP), Vasquez scuffled in Altoona all this year with a 5.12 ERA in 12 starts and a 50% increase in his HR/9 over the year before.
Susi was the 12th round pick out of UConn. He’d hit 206/324/254 in 22 games at Morgantown, but he only had a career .069 ISO in college as well.
Games
The GCL and DSL teams don’t play on Sundays.
— Indianapolis (62-51) blew an early 5-0 lead and lost to Toledo, 7-6. Clay Holmes gave up two runs in four innings. Holmes allowed five hits and two walks, and struck out only one. He apparently was on a limited pitch count, which the Pirates do at times, as he threw only 59. Wyatt Mathisen drove in four runs, three with his seventh home run. (Four different players in the system hit home run #7 today.) Holmes left with a 5-2 lead, but Montana DuRapau gave up five in an inning and two-thirds, with Damon Magnifico letting the last three score. DuRapau now has an ERA of 6.87. Kevin Newman was 1-5 and Kevin Kramer 1-3 with a walk. Jason Martin went 0-5 and is in a 3-for-34 slump.
— Altoona (58-50) beat Akron, 4-1. Cam Vieaux (pictured) had a strong start, allowing one run in seven innings on five hits. He didn’t walk anybody and struck out six. Ke’Bryan Hayes went 1-3 with a walk and his seventh home run, which he hit off Triston McKenzie, Cleveland’s top prospect. Bryan Reynolds went 2-4 with a triple and Logan Hill 2-4 with a double. Will Craig was 1-4 with his 89th RBI. Cole Tucker was 0-4 and is now mired in a 1-for-23 skid.
— Bradenton (50-55) scored two in the bottom of the tenth to beat Clearwater, 3-2. After giving up the bogus run in the top of the inning, the Marauders tied the game on a single by Hunter Owen and won it on a walkoff single by Bligh Madris. James Marvel went eight innings for Bradenton, allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out four. Adrian Valerio went 2-5, and Owen and Madris each 1-5. Jared Oliva was 0-4 but scored two runs.
— West Virginia (56-52) lost to Augusta, 5-1. The Power had only six hits, half of them by Raul Hernandez, who was 3-4 with a double. Deon Stafford was 1-3 with a double and a walk. Cal Mitchell went 0-4 with three strikeouts. Starter Hunter Stratton allowed two runs in five innings.
— Morgantown (17-32) lost for the 18th time in its last 24 games, 6-5, to Batavia. Eighth round pick Zach Spears gave up five runs in four innings, leaving him with an ERA of 7.46. Mike Gretler and Brett Kinneman were each 2-5 with a double. Travis Swaggerty was 1-5.
— Bristol (19-24) beat Kingsport, 12-5. Jonah Davis hit a grand slam, his seventh home run overall. Mason Martin hit his seventh for Bristol. Davis and Martin each went 1-5 with a walk. Sherten Apostel went 2-4 with two walks and Chase Lambert 2-3 with one walk. The Pirates drew nine walks in the game; they lead the Appalachian League in free passes by a comfortable margin. Starter Oliver Garcia gave up four runs, three earned, in five and a third innings.
