Game Thread: Taillon tries to pull the Bucs back to their feet in Denver

MLB: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates, shut out 2-0 in the first game of the series on Monday, need to get back in the groove as they’ve dropped seven of their last eleven after riding high on an eleven game winning streak. With Jameson Taillon (8-8, 3.74) starting for the Pirates aganist the Rockies’ Chad Bettis (5-1, 5.10), both are players who batled testicular cancer in 2017.

Bettis has a 5.03 career ERA in six seasons in Denver. This year his fastball comes in at an average speed of 90.5 mph, and he’s has a strikeout rate of only 6.5 every 9 innings.

Facing the right-hander tonight, Pirates’ manager Clint Hurdle has put third baseman Colin Moran back in the starting lineup in place of Elias Diaz, with David Freese shifting over to first base and Francisco Cervelli moving back behind the plate.
