Trevor Williams remained dominant as the Bucs cruised to a 3-0 victory to even the series.
Williams struck out seven over six shutout innings of work while only allowing four base hits, none of which went for extra bases. That pitching excellence continued when Richard Rodriguez, Kyle Crick, and Filipe Vazquez teamed up to throw a scoreless 7th, 8th, and 9th to secure the Pittsburgh victory.
The strong showing by the pitching staff ensured the offensive effort in tonight’s matchup was more than adequate. Here’s how the scoring went:
Pittsburgh got things moving with two outs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Trevor Williams reached on an infield single which rolled the order over to Adam Frazier. Frazier followed up Williams’ two out infield hit with a single of his own, placing runners at first and second. Marte stepped in the box next and delivered a triple down the left field line, scoring both Williams and Frazier for the first two runs of the game.
After failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the 5th and 6th innings, Pittsburgh tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th. Josh Bell led the inning off with a single to left. Dickerson took his spot on first base after grounding into a force out in which Bell was out at second. Jordan Luplow stepped in next and worked a walk to place runners at first and second base. Colin Moran then delivered a single to left, bringing Dickerson around to score the Pirates’ third and final run of the day before the Bucs ran themselves out of the inning after a botched double steal attempt.
The three run lead was plenty for Filipe Vazquez to work with as he shut the door on the Brewers for his 36th save of the season.
Final Score: Pirates 3, Brewers 0
W: Williams (14-9) L: Davies (2-7) SV: Vazquez (36)
The Pirates and Brewers will do it again in game three of the series as Nick Kingham faces off against Wade Miley at 1:35pm EDT.
