Where Have You Gone, 2013 Pirates?

With the likely departure of Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison after this season, there will be only one member of the 2013 Pirates still here. I thought it'd be good to go through all the regular members of the 2013 Pirates and see where and how they left the Pirates in the last five years. To keep this list manageable, I am not including any position players who played in fewer than 20 games or pitchers who pitched in fewer than 10 games.

Gone during or after the 2013 Sesaon:

1. Garrett Jones. He was signed as a minor league free agent in 2009 and made his major league debut that year. He left as a free agent after the 2013 season and signed with the Marlins and was traded to the Yankees where he finished his Major League career.

2. Michael McKenry. During the 2011 Catcherpocalypse, he was purchased from the Boston Red Sox to provide someone other Dusty Brown to catch for the sort of contending Pirates. He was injured during the 2013 season and didn't play after July 27th. He became a free agent and signed with his old team the Rockies for the next two years. Besides a short stint with the Cardinals in 2016, he spent pretty much all of 2016 and 2017 in the minors and retired from playing to become Kent Tekulve's post game show replacement.

3. Marlon Byrd. He was a trade deadline pickup to man the short handed OF after Starling Marte was injured. He left as a free agent to the Phillies and was traded to the Reds and the Giants the next two years. He signed with the Indians in 2016 but retired before they made the World Series.

4. Justin Morneau. He was another trade deadline pickup to handle 1B. He signed with Colorado for two years and then a year in Chicago with the White Sox.

5. Alex Presley. He was traded to the Twins for Justin Morneau.

6. Brandon Inge. He was released half way through the season.

Left during the 2014 Season:

1. Jason Grilli. He was traded away for Ernesto Frieri, a trade that everyone thought was great at the time, but turned out to be a total disaster. Frieri hit Goldschmidt with a pitch and that lead to the insane jack ass Kirk Gibson ordering a hit on Cutch the next day, with Cutch out for a couple of weeks, it probably cost the Pirates a division title.

2. Bryan Morris. He was sent to the Marlins for a draft pick that June. That draft pick ended up becoming Connor Joe. Who in turn was traded for Sean Rodriguez in 2017...

3. Wandy Rodriguez. The Pirates gave him plenty of chances to turn things around in 2014, but he never did. He ended up pitching for a while with the Texas Rangers but he has since retired.

Left after the 2014 Season:

1. Russell Martin. Despite a lot of pressure on the Pirates to keep Martin and sign him long term, he gave the Pirates an extra draft pick in the 2015 draft (which has turned in to KeBryan Hayes). With still a season left in Toronto, he hasn't been able to replicate his time in Pittsburgh. He is pretty much what he was with the Yankees in 2012 the last three seasons.

2. Gaby Sanchez. The Pirates 1B most of the year until Justin Morneau came along, he platooned with Ike Davis in 2014. He was then released after the 2014 season.

3. Justin Wilson. He was traded to the Yankees in order to get Francisco Cervelli. One of those rare trades where both sides won.

4. Jeanmar Gomez. He was also a free agent after the 2014 season and went across the state to the Phillies where he had a good year in 2015 and a bad year in 2016 and was released in 2017. He's now with the White Sox.

5. Clint Barmes. Despite starring in a pretty good fist bump GIF with Cocktailsfor2, he left as a free agent after the 2014 season and played in 2015 with the Padres. He has since retired.

6. Vin Mazzaro. He became a free agent and signed with the Marlins. Today he's not with any major league team.

Left during the 2015 Season.

1. Jose Tabata. Was traded to the Dodgers for Michael Morse. Good idea.

Left after the 2015 Season:

1. Neil Walker. He was traded to the Mets for Jon Niese for some idiotic reason that never made any real sense at all. The Mets sent him to the Brewers last year at the deadline and then the Yankees picked him as a bench guy this year.

2. Pedro Alvarez. In a good move for him, he left the National League and joined the Orioles where he could DH everyday and not have to worry about trying to field a position. He still with the Orioles today, but isn't anywhere near as good as he was 2012-16.

3. AJ Burnett. He left after the 2013 season but took a paycut to play with the Pirates instead of the Phillies in 2015. Part of a very solid rotation that year, he helped get the Pirates to the Wild Card game in 2015 and was injured so the Pirates picked up JA Happ to replace him for a while.

4. Tony Sanchez. He was drafted ahead of Mike Trout for some dumb reason and he became a free agent before him too. In this case he took his talents to Toronto's AAA team. Today he's with the Texas Rangers organization.

5. Charlie Morton. He won a World Series with the 2017 Astros. But before that he was salary dumped on the Phillies where he didn't make it out of April un-injured in 2016. After his 4th game with the Phillies, that was it there. He signed with the Astros and was a World Series hero.

6. Travis Snider. He had a great 2014 season and the Pirates traded him to the Orioles. But the Orioles had buyer's remorse and he was released. The Pirates picked him up where he really did nothing at the end of 2015. He left after the season and he plays in the Independent League now.

Left during the 2016 Season:

1. Mark Melancon. An absolute stud during his time in Pittsburgh, the Pirates smartly traded him at the deadline and obtained Felipe Rivero, who later became Vazquez for some reason. Melancon currently plays with the Giants.

2. Francisco Liriano. Yeah.

Left after the 2016 Season:

1. Jeff Locke. He went on to become a punter in the NFL with the Vikings, I think. Or he pitched for the Marlins in 2017. Whichever....

2. Jared Hughes. He had a terrible spring training for the Pirates in 2017 and the Pirates let him go before the season began. He ended up doing okay with the Brewers, so it was probably a bad idea to let him go. He continues his tour of the NL Central with the Reds now.

Left during the 2017 Season:

1. Tony Watson. He was traded to the Dodgers at the trade dealine where he faced off against the Charlie Morton-lead Astros in the World Series. He has since joined Melancon in San Francisco.

Left after the 2017 Season:

1. Andrew McCutchen. At least we got Kyle Crick.

2. Gerrit Cole. Yeah. Again.

Likely gone after this year:

1. Jordy Mercer

2. Josh Harrison.

Will likely still be on the roster when the Pirates break camp in 2019:

1. Starling Marte
