The Pirates (78-76), officially eliminated from playoff contention, embark on their final road trip of the season, starting off with four at the Cubs (91-64).
The Cubs hold a 2 1/2 game lead over the Brewers in the National League Central. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is two; the number for the division is five. The Cubs have won seven of their last 10, having taken two of three at the crosstown rival White Sox over the weekend.
Kris Bryant sat out Sunday’s game with shoulder fatigue. The back of Chicago’s bullpen is in transition, if not quite flux, with injuries to Brandon Morrow and Pedro Strop.
