Game Thread: Archer Takes The Hill In The Home Opener

MLB: Spring Training-Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Yankees Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

It’s finally spring in Pittsburgh.

Chris Archer (6-8, 4.31 in 2018) and the Pirates will welcome Adam Wainwright (2-4, 4.86 in 2018) and the St. Louis Cardinals to PNC Park Monday. First pitch comes at 1:05 p.m..

Opening day starts are nothing new for Archer. He pitched the season opener the previous four seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing 12 earned runs in 23.2 innings pitched (4.56 ERA) with one quality start.

Today’s lineup is a little different than the two Clint Hurdle penciled in against Cincinnati. Colin Moran will start at third base over Jung-Ho Kang, and Pablo Reyes gets the nod in right field over Melky Cabrera. Hurdle cited Kang’s (.111/.100/.222) and Cabrera’s (.091/.167/0.91) poor career numbers against Wainwright as the reason why.

“I want to get [Moran] involved,” Hurdle said. “He hit a homer off of Wainwright last year.

...In right field, Melky is 1-11, so we thought we’d get Reyes out there. A guy that maybe a veteran pitcher doesn’t know as well.”
